How we determine the Islamic date
The date is calculated, then checked against the moon-sighting practice India follows.
Astronomical calculation
The Hijri date is computed daily with a trusted astronomical model, the same standard behind many Islamic calendars and apps.
Hanafi method
Method 1, the University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi, followed across India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
New Delhi · IST
Calculated for New Delhi (28.6° N, 77.2° E) and India Standard Time (UTC+5:30), so it is right for all of India.
Daily refresh
The date is cached for speed and updates on its own at midnight IST, so you always see today's number.
Calculation, confirmed by sighting
The date here is calculated and accurate for daily reference. For the start of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, and Eid al-Adha, the official date in India comes from a confirmed crescent sighting (ruet-e-hilal), which can differ from a calculation by a day. For those three, confirm with your local moon-sighting committee or mosque.
Why the Hanafi method?
The Hanafi madhab is followed by most Sunni Muslims in India, including communities across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Maharashtra. The same methodology is used by Islamic bodies in Pakistan and Bangladesh, which makes it the right default for a South Asian audience.
